Free websites and software for nonprofits

VR9 for Good is a pro bono program: free websites, software, games and IT help for nonprofits, charities and social projects in any country. It is held to the same standard as paid client projects.

A site that works but looks dated is a good enough reason to write.

What you can ask for

  • Websites and web services

Sites. Accounts. Dashboards. Real-time interfaces. APIs.

  • Software and apps

Mobile and desktop. Installable web apps (PWA): an icon on the screen, working with no network.

  • Games

Browser, casual, VR. Gravewaltz — Unity, Meta Quest 3. Hush Atlas — a walking game across rock layers.

  • Bots and data

Moderation, alerts, assistance. Messengers and social networks. Collectors for data with no public API.

  • Servers and infrastructure

Hosting, domains, mail, backups. Setup, moving to a new server, monitoring.

  • Consulting

Architecture and stack. Code and project audits. Estimates. Help with a project that got stuck.

Who it is for

Nonprofits, charities, community groups and social initiatives. The project has to serve people or a public cause, not earn profit for its owners.

Commercial projects go through the regular contact page.

How requests are chosen

A person reads every request. It then joins a queue in the order it arrived. Two things can move it ahead:

  • Urgency

A page for people affected by a disaster, a launch tied to an event or a fixed date.

  • Benefit

How many people the project helps and how much it changes for them.

Not every request can be taken, and a place in the queue is not a start date. You get an answer within two weeks, including when the answer is no.

What stays with you

The domain, hosting and accounts are registered to you, so the result keeps working without VR9. Their running costs stay on your side, and the cheapest option that fits is the one recommended.

The scope and the period of support after launch are agreed before work starts.

With your permission, the finished project is written up on the VR9 blog.

Common questions

Can a nonprofit get a website for free?
Yes. VR9 builds new websites and redesigns existing ones free of charge for nonprofits, charities, community groups and social projects. Send a request, and a person reads it.
What free IT help can a charity ask for?
The same services as paid clients get: websites and web services, software and apps, games, bots and data collection, servers and infrastructure, and consulting. That includes accessible software and games, for example for people with impaired hearing or vision.
Is the work really pro bono? What costs remain?
VR9 charges nothing for the work. The running costs of the domain and hosting stay on your side, because they are registered to you. The cheapest option that fits is the one recommended.
Does the organization have to be registered?
No particular legal form is asked for. The project has to serve people or a public cause rather than earn profit for its owners.
Which countries does it cover?
Any country.
How are requests chosen, and how long does it take?
Requests join a queue in the order they arrive. Urgency and benefit to people can move one ahead. Not every request can be taken, and you get an answer within two weeks either way.
